How To Choose Your First Tarot Deck

Jennifer VanBenschoten

So, you’re ready to choose a Tarot deck! Hooray! One of the most common misconceptions about Tarot is that you have to wait to have a deck given to you before you can start to learn how to read. But if that were true, there would be very few great Tarot readers out there.

But I know how delightfully overwhelming it can be to choose your first Tarot deck. Walking into a metaphysical book shop and seeing shelves and shelves full of decks is enough to make anyone feel a little nervous. So just to take some of the pressure off, here are 4 things to look for when you’re choosing your first Tarot deck:

Beautiful, clear images. You want to be able to see and connect with the images on your first Tarot deck, so make sure they’re clear and you can understand them. Minimalist decks are nice, but so are decks that give you plenty to look at. Regardless of how many images are on each card, you want to make sure that you feel an intuitive connection with what you see.

A system that you can understand. Your deck doesn’t necessarily have to have the traditional cups, swords, pentacles, and wands of the Rider-Waite Tarot, but it should have some kind of organization of the pip cards that you can easily equate to each of these things when reading.

Easily held in your hands. When it comes to Tarot, size matters. Cards that are too small may be hard to see. A huge Tarot deck might be difficult to handle and shuffle. Make sure you check the dimensions of the cards when ordering a deck online, or if you’re in a physical book shop or metaphysical store, ask if you can see a sample deck to check the size.

Trust your gut. The single most important thing you can do when choosing your first Tarot deck is to find one that you connect with on an intuitive and personal level. Love Halloween? One of my Tarot students brought her Halloween Tarot deck to our class! Are you a fan of classical art? There are decks out there that use those images, too. Is animal medicine an important part of your spiritual practice? No worries, there are plenty of non-human animal decks out there.

No matter what your interest, I’m pretty sure that you’ll be able to find a great Tarot deck that works for you!
