Are You A Shaman?

Jennifer VanBenschoten

Well, if that's not a loaded question, I don't know what is. But I figure it's a good question to answer for my first (yikes!) blog here on my new home on the interwebz...

Are You A Shaman?

"Shaman" has become quite a buzzword in the last few years. Everywhere you look, it seems, someone is promoting or selling something with "shamanic this" or "shamanic that" in the name. Shamanic Reiki has finally found its place in mainstream spirituality, and a simple Google search will give you dozens of courses on how you can learn to be a "shaman". (But that's a blog for another time.)

What is a shaman, anyway?

The word "shaman" comes from the Siberian tradition of medicine men and women, and the term was introduced to the West sometime around 1552. "Shamanism" was used by Western anthropologists to describe the spiritual practices of Eastern European and Siberian people, and then eventually used to describe the nature-based spirituality practices of North American tribes as well.

What does it really mean to be a shaman?

A shaman is someone who can access altered states of consciousness in order to commune with and channel the transcendental energies of the Spirit world into the physical realm. Simply put, a shamanic practitioner is one who regularly works with the Spirit realm and can see and feel the energetic connections between this world and the unseen world of non-ordinary reality.

So, does that mean that we are all shamans?

My personal belief is that we all have the capacity to become more awake and to do the work necessary to become those channels of transcendent energy between the physical world and the world of non-ordinary reality. It's not all easy work, but it doesn't have to be difficult, either. In our own way, each of us can find a way to slow down and connect with our own unique inner wisdom.

I wanted to honor that idea by creating the Shaman Amulet pendants - each one features either a unique gemstone donut or a genuine fossilized ammonite. The focal piece of each shaman amulet is supported in a cold forged copper frame, and embellished with a unique combination of gemstones, natural beads, and vintage glass beads.
